Salt has a bit of a PR problem.
For years it has been lumped with sugar and ultra processed foods, which has led many people to believe that salt is something to avoid altogether. In reality it’s not salt itself that is the issue - it is the context it is usually consumed in.
Your body needs sodium
Sodium is an essential mineral. It helps regulate fluid balance, supports nerve signalling and muscle contraction, and plays a key role in hydration.
Without enough sodium, your body struggles to retain fluids, which is why drinking more water alone doesn’t always help.
Electrolytes work as a system. Sodium helps with fluid absorption, potassium balances it, and minerals like magnesium and calcium support muscle and nerve function.
Not all salt is the same
Most of the concern around salt comes from refined table salt found in processed foods. This type of salt is heavily refined and typically combined with sugar, additives and preservatives.
Mineral salts, such as pink Himalayan salt, are less refined and naturally contain trace minerals.
Salt isn’t the problem. Electrolytes aren’t extreme.
Used properly, they support hydration, energy and balance - not just during workouts, but in everyday life.
